Why A Betta Fish Is A Great Pandemic Pet
The coronavirus pandemic continues to keep families and friends isolated and many people are turning to pets for companionship. Depending on where you live, a pet may not be allowed. You may not have time or the resources for a furry or feathered friend, but have you ever considered a finned companion?
A fish is the perfect pandemic – or even pet for your college student, if he or she is able to attend college on campus – might be the betta fish. These fish are colorful, don’t require a lot of attention and the space they require depends on the size of the fish bowl you buy.
Here are some of the reasons to bring a betta fish into your life.
- They are cost effective. An entire betta fish set up may only set you back about $50 – perhaps even less
- They are relaxing to watch
- They are quiet companions
- It’s easy to keep their bowl clean
- They don’t require a lot of upkeep or maintenance – a weekly cleaning and replacement of the water in the bowl are about it
- You will need to sprinkle in food once or twice a day (again, this makes them low maintenance)
If your new college student has been accustomed to caring for, and sharing his or her life with a pet, a betta may not take the place of a puppy or kitten, but it is a companion. Remind your college student that he may not know how much, or how little, time he will have available and that a betta is a great “starter” pet. This is especially true if you share a room; your roommate may not want to share his or her life and space with a pet like a hamster or bird, but a fish is no problem!
A betta fish is also an ideal companion for you or a loved one who is home alone because of the pandemic. A fish can keep them company, keep them active and engaged because they need to care for their fish and that is a good thing. Who knows, you may see the betta on your next Zoom call!
